Osaka University will hold the 14th Conference of the Japanese Association for Digital Humanities (JADH2025) on September 19, 2025 (pre-event, Toyonaka Campus) and September 20-21, 2025 (main event, Minoh Campus).
The pre-event will feature a workshop titled "Basic Course on Text Data Construction Methods for the Humanities" by Nagasaki Kennobu (Institute for Digital Humanities/Keio University). Participants will be able to bring their own computers and learn hands-on techniques for turning research texts into rich structured data in accordance with the TEI guidelines.
The main event program, under the theme of "Crossing the Gap: Rethinking Boundaries between the Humanities and Informatics," brought together research from around the world that demonstrates the deepening and expansion of Digital Humanities (DH).
Its distinctive feature is the coexistence of cutting-edge attempts such as generative AI for literary and historical interpretation, and rigorous fundamental methods such as TEI and corpus analysis. The subjects it deals with span a wide range of time and place, from classical Japanese texts to contemporary games and apps, Brazilian urban theory, and records of marginalized people.
For the keynote speech, we have invited Professor Carina van Dalen-Oskam (University of Amsterdam), a leading expert in the field of Computational Literary Studies. Under the theme of "Literary Influence and the Development of Style," she will present stimulating case studies, including stylistic analysis that reveals influences between authors and analysis of keystroke logs that record the writing process itself. This cutting-edge research delves not only into the finished "work" but also into the "process" of creation.
Please take a look at the cutting edge of knowledge that reflects the current state of DH!
Incidentally, 12 undergraduate and graduate students from our university (Faculty of Letters, Faculty of Foreign Languages, Graduate School of Humanities, Faculty of Engineering Science, and Graduate School of Information Science) will also be taking on the challenge of running the international conference event as staff members.
The application period is until September 5th, so if you are interested in participating, please apply now.
Additionally, as the host university, Osaka University students can participate free of charge.
